From one viewpoint we can look at speech work as a factor of significance in the solution of some of our social problems. The student may approach the work believing it to be a force, which may help towards the destruction of the unnatural barriers of class distinction. We all realise, after a moment's thought, how sensitive we are about our " accent," how a slur cast upon it fills us with resentment and raises an invisible?we will hope momentary? barrier between us and our critics.
